Chapter 02

A Voice in
Two Worlds

Manika Kaur is a singer, composer and author based in Melbourne, Australia. Her album Sacred Words entered the World Music Charts Europe — the first time Sikh Kirtan reached the chart — and her voice has been heard at the United Nations, in cathedrals and on festival stages across five continents. Producers from Talvin Singh to Martin Glover (Youth) have woven her kirtan into contemporary sound — the harmonium and sarangi kept exact, the horizon widened.

The Instruments

Instruments of
Prayer

Harmonium breathes. Sarangi weeps. Cello holds the ground. In Manika's arrangements, ancient instruments meet electronic texture — never to replace the tradition, only to carry it further.

The Thread
From the darbar of the Golden Temple to the concert halls of the world, the thread is unbroken. Manika's kirtan keeps the ancient exact — and makes it feel immediate.
